The history of architecture is the evolution of building design from ancient times (Mesopotamian ziggurats, Egyptian pyramids) to the modern era, focusing on function and technology. Its development spans Classical (Greek/Roman), Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Modern, to Post-modern styles, reflecting changes in technology, materials, and human social needs.

The following are the key points in the history of architecture:

  • Ancient Times (Neolithic - Roman): Originating from the need for permanent dwellings and places of worship (Ziggurats). The Greeks developed columns (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian), while the Romans introduced arch and dome techniques.

  • The Middle Ages (500-1500 AD): Dominated by church architecture in Romanesque and Gothic styles, featuring tall structures and intricate ornamentation.

  • The Renaissance (1400-1600 AD): A revival of Greco-Roman classical styles with an emphasis on symmetry, proportion, and perspective.

  • Baroque & Neoclassical (1600-1850 AD): Baroque emphasized drama and complexity. Neoclassicism returned to classical simplicity, often applied to public buildings.

  • Modern (1900-1960 AD): The use of steel, glass, and reinforced concrete. Guided by the principle "form follows function" (e.g., Bauhaus, International Style).

  • Post-Modern & Contemporary (1960-Present): A blend of historical styles with new technology, sustainability (eco-friendly), and energy efficiency.

Architecture continues to evolve from mere physical construction into a fusion of art, technology, and human needs, including the modern tropical approach that is currently popular in Indonesia."
